Flash Flood Emergency in Palm Bay and West Melbourne; Polk County Under a Flood Watch Monday

The National Weather Service declared a Flash Flood Emergency for West Melbourne and Palm Bay Monday morning after 8 to 12 inches of rain fell in southeastern Brevard County.

The National Weather Service in Melbourne declared a Flash Flood Emergency for West Melbourne and Palm Bay at 7:56 AM ET Monday, Nov. 2. Radar and rain gauges showed 8 to 12 inches of rain had fallen in southeastern Brevard County, with 4 to 6 more inches possible. Brevard Public Schools and county courts closed for the day. West Melbourne police reported flooded, impassable roads, including parts of Minton Road. Flooding was also reported in Palm Bay, Titusville and Satellite Beach.

Closer to home, NWS Tampa Bay has Polk, Hardee, DeSoto and Highlands counties under a Flood Watch until 3 PM Monday. A Flash Flood Warning covered parts of Hardee, DeSoto and Highlands counties, including Wauchula, Arcadia, Sebring and Avon Park, after radar showed 5 to 8 inches of rain. Flood Watches also remain in effect through Monday evening for much of east central and South Florida.

River flooding may last longer than the rain. The St. Johns River near Cocoa is forecast to rise into moderate flood stage by Friday morning, when water may enter low-lying homes in the Lake Poinsett area. Moderate flooding continues on the St. Johns near Astor. Separately, the National Hurricane Center gives a low that may form northeast of the Bahamas a 20 percent chance of subtropical development over the next seven days. Hurricane season ends Nov. 30.

If water gets into your home or business, stay safe first and never drive through flooded roads. Once it is safe, photograph the damage and start drying out quickly. The EPA says drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours helps prevent mold.
