East Florida Flood Recovery Continues After This Week's Heavy Rains

Riviera Beach residents are cleaning out flood-damaged homes, Okeechobee County is seeking state recovery help after about 13 inches of rain, and Port St. Lucie opened a disaster repair loan program for eligible homeowners.

Communities across Florida's east coast are still digging out after this week's prolonged heavy rain and flooding. In Riviera Beach, residents of Lone Pine Estates and other neighborhoods are assessing interior water damage, ruined flooring and baseboards, and high-water marks on vehicles. City crews have been pumping standing water from Lone Pine Estates, Indian Trace, Woodbine and Turtle Cay. Officials set up an aid station at Lone Pine Park with water, food, bleach and paper products, and plan to keep it open Friday through Sunday. Mayor Ronnie Felder urged residents to call their insurance companies first and warned vendors against price gouging. Residents with questions can call the city's information line at 877-257-2374.

In Okeechobee County, officials remain at a Level 1 emergency after about 13 inches of rain flooded roads and low-lying areas. The county was added to the governor's emergency order for this week's flooding. County administrators reported about 62 million gallons of water pumped from roadways and low areas so far. Preliminary residential damage is about $2.1 million, not counting roughly 850 structures still awaiting assessment and about 400 flooded mobile homes that crews cannot yet inspect because of high water. Inspected infrastructure damage is estimated around $4.2 million.

Port St. Lucie opened a Disaster Relief Program funded through the Florida Housing Finance Corporation's State Housing Initiatives Partnership. Income-eligible homeowners may receive up to $25,000 in 0% interest deferred loans for emergency flood-related repairs such as water extraction, removal of water-damaged materials, roof weatherproofing and related work needed to protect the home. Loans are forgiven over five years under program rules. Mold inspection and remediation are not eligible; homeowners must finish mold work before other approved repairs can be funded. The city allocated $1 million. Neighborhood Services: 772-344-4084.

Separately, the National Hurricane Center's 1 PM EST Friday, Nov. 6 Tropical Weather Outlook notes a non-tropical low several hundred miles south of Bermuda (AL94) with only a 10 percent chance of acquiring subtropical characteristics over the next 48 hours or seven days. It is forecast to move eastward over the open Atlantic and is not a threat to Florida.

If water got into your home or business, stay safe first and never drive through flooded roads. Once it is safe, photograph the damage and start drying out quickly. The EPA says drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours helps prevent mold.
