A 10-Minute Water Check for Lakeland Homes Before the Rest of Hurricane Season
Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30. A quick walk-through now can catch small leaks before the next heavy rain turns them into real damage.
Isaias stayed well west of Polk County, and the National Hurricane Center expects no new Atlantic tropical cyclones over the next seven days. Hurricane season still runs through November 30, and a calm stretch is the easiest time to find small water problems before the next heavy rain.
Start where water usually gets in. Look for stains or soft spots on ceilings, especially under the roofline and around vents. Check baseboards and floors near exterior doors and windows for swelling or discoloration. Open the sink cabinets and look at the supply lines and drain. Check behind the refrigerator ice maker line, around the water heater, and at the AC air handler's drain pan.
Also watch for signs that water may be hiding: a musty smell that won't go away, warped flooring, or a water bill that jumps without explanation. Leaving water in place lets it spread into drywall and subfloor, and it can lead to mold.
If you find water, or a spot you can't explain, Florida Restoration Specialists does water extraction and drying in Lakeland and across Polk County. Call (863) 588-6617.
