Metro Atlanta flash floods prompt warnings; Nickajack Creek at flood stage

Parts of metro Atlanta spent Saturday under National Weather Service flash flood warnings as heavy showers and thunderstorms flooded roads and slowed travel. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported warnings covering portions of Fulton, Cobb, and DeKalb counties into early afternoon after 1 to 3 inches of rain had already fallen in places, with an additional 1 to 2 inches possible under the warning. Local reporting also noted lane blockages from flooding, including on I-75 North at Moores Mill Road.

At 12:32 p.m. EDT Saturday, NWS Peachtree City issued a Flood Warning for Nickajack Creek at US 278 near Mableton in Cobb County. The gage was at 10.2 feet at noon — above the 10.0-foot flood stage — with minor flooding expected in woodlands and the natural flood plain, including portions of Nickajack Park upstream from the gage. The warning remains in effect from this afternoon until further notice. NWS reminds drivers to turn around, don’t drown, on flooded roads.

For Florida and the broader Atlantic basin, the National Hurricane Center’s 8:00 a.m. EDT Saturday Tropical Weather Outlook stated that tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next seven days. The NWS Tampa Bay point forecast for the Tampa area called for scattered afternoon thunderstorms Saturday with about a 50% chance of rain — typical wet-season storms that can still briefly flood low-lying streets.
