Pensacola downtown streets flood after intense Saturday downpour
Pensacola Public Works measured nearly 3 inches of rain Saturday, including 1.7 inches in 30 minutes downtown. Street flooding on Palafox drew social media attention; city officials say rainfall intensity briefly outpaced typical storm-sewer design rates. Atlantic tropics remain quiet for Florida.
Downtown Pensacola saw brief but intense street flooding Saturday as a strong thunderstorm dumped heavy rain across the city. According to WEAR-TV, Pensacola Public Works reported 1.7 inches of rainfall at City Hall in a 30-minute period and 2.99 inches for the full storm. Officials also noted another 30-minute window where rainfall intensity was equivalent to about 9 inches per hour. Many of the widely shared flooding videos were taken on Palafox Street. City leaders said stormwaters receded once the rain stopped.
Mayor D.C. Reeves told WEAR that most municipal storm-sewer networks are engineered for roughly a 5- to 10-year design storm (about 1.5 to 1.8 inches per hour of intake capacity), and that Saturday’s rates nearly surpassed the top of that range in half the time. City engineer Brad Hinote said no stormwater system in the country could pass the flow generated by that storm. The city recently upgraded stormwater infrastructure on Palafox as part of its “Reimagine Palafox” project.
For the broader Atlantic basin, the National Hurricane Center’s 8:00 a.m. EDT Monday Tropical Weather Outlook continues to monitor a trough of low pressure a little more than 1,000 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, with a near 0 percent chance of formation in 48 hours and a low 30 percent chance over seven days. There are no tropical cyclones in the Atlantic, and NWS Tampa Bay reports no watches, warnings, or advisories for west-central Florida as of Monday morning. Localized wet-season downpours can still flood roads and low-lying property even without a named storm.
