South Florida’s Flood Risk Peaks Again This Afternoon Before a Drier Trend

NWS Miami expects scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms again Wednesday, with a marginal excessive-rainfall risk and the main flooding concern along east-coast metro areas. Rain chances stay elevated through Friday before a quieter weekend; NHC shows no tropical threat to Florida.

The National Weather Service Miami Area Forecast Discussion issued at 7:40 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 23, said scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms were expected again Wednesday, with rain chances remaining elevated through Friday before falling this weekend. Heavy downpours could again cause localized flooding in urban and poor-drainage areas. Precipitable water remained above the 90th percentile for the date (about 2.1 to 2.4 inches), and the Weather Prediction Center carried a marginal excessive-rainfall risk for Wednesday. East-coast metro areas were the main concern after recent antecedent rainfall.

Local 10 Weather, published about 7:29 a.m. EDT Wednesday, reported 2 to 4 inches overnight into Wednesday morning across northeast Miami-Dade and southern Broward, with light-to-moderate rain continuing and more storms possible into the afternoon.

NWS Miami said Thursday begins a pattern change, with lower rain chances especially near Lake Okeechobee and Southwest Florida. Localized flooding is not expected to be a Thursday concern as drier air filters in. The weekend looks quieter for much of South Florida.

The National Hurricane Center Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook at 8:00 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 23, showed no tropical cyclone threat to Florida. A low near the Cabo Verde Islands had a 30 percent chance of formation within 48 hours and a 40 percent chance within 7 days, with a possible short-lived depression Thursday or Friday. Remnants of former Tropical Storm Fay, about 800 miles southwest of the Azores, had a 20 percent chance of redevelopment through 48 hours and through 7 days. Neither system threatens Florida.
