South Florida flood advisories follow Thursday storms as wet October pattern builds
NWS flood advisories covered Broward, Miami-Dade, and southeastern Palm Beach on Thursday for minor flooding from heavy thunderstorms, while NHC keeps the Atlantic quiet near Florida and NWS Jacksonville flags a wetter stretch into next week with localized flood risk.
National Weather Service flood advisories tracked heavy Thursday thunderstorms across South Florida. Local reports citing NWS products said a Flood Advisory for Broward and parts of Miami-Dade was in effect into early Thursday afternoon for minor flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas, with 1 to 2 inches already down and another 1 to 2 inches possible in the advisory window. A separate Flood Advisory for southeastern Palm Beach County — including Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach — was in effect until mid-afternoon for the same type of minor street and lot flooding after 1 to 2 inches of rain, with up to about an inch more possible. Officials repeated the standard guidance: turn around, don’t drown on flooded roads.
Farther north, Florida Public Radio Emergency Network and NWS Jacksonville messaging point to a wetter stretch from Friday through early next week that can both ease stubborn drought and still produce brief localized flooding. NWS Jacksonville has highlighted waves of heavy downpours capable of ponding and short-lived flood impacts across northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, with multi-day rainfall totals that could climb into several inches in places such as the St. Augustine and Palm Coast area by midweek if the pattern holds. West-central Florida and the Panhandle also see increasing shower and storm chances, while South Florida keeps more typical scattered afternoon storms and a continued high rip-current risk on Atlantic beaches into the weekend.
On the tropics, the National Hurricane Center’s Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook at 2:00 PM EDT Thursday, October 1, 2026, states there are no tropical cyclones in the Atlantic. The only disturbance noted is a low associated with the remnants of former Tropical Storm Fay several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda, with formation chances low (10 percent) through seven days and no Florida or U.S. mainland tropical impacts indicated from that feature. Hurricane Rachel and other Pacific systems remain outside the Atlantic basin and are not a Florida land threat based on current NHC products.
Even short-lived street flooding and storm-driven water intrusion can leave standing water in homes, crawl spaces, and businesses.
