St. Johns River near Astor stays in minor flood as NWS forecasts weekend crest
A Flood Warning continues for the St. Johns River near Astor in Lake and Volusia Counties, with minor flooding ongoing and a forecast crest near 2.8 feet this weekend while coastal flooding advisories linger for the broader St. Johns River Basin.
The National Weather Service Melbourne Flood Statement issued Saturday morning continues a Flood Warning for the St. Johns River Near Astor along the Lake and Volusia County line. Minor flooding is occurring and forecast, and the warning remains in effect until further notice. At 8:30 AM EDT Saturday the river stage was 2.7 feet — above the 2.3-foot flood stage and the 2.0-foot bankfull level — matching the maximum stage over the prior 24 hours ending at that time.
NWS forecasts a crest near 2.8 feet this weekend, with Sunday crest timing noted in the narrative, then a gradual fall through Minor Flood Stage into mid next week. At about 2.8 feet, impacts include docks and boat ramps covered at South Moon Fish Camp; water approaching the seawall at Blair's Jungle Den; water approaching sites at Fish Tales RV Resort and Astor Landing Campground; a portion of Clair Street covered south of Butler Boat Ramp; docks underwater at Astor Bridge Marina and along Riveredge Drive; portions of Fox Road covered nearest the river; and Acorn, Hazelnut, and Redbud roads underwater with yards inundated.
Separately, NWS Jacksonville has extended a Coastal Flood Advisory for parts of the St. Johns River Basin — Eastern Clay, Eastern Putnam, Trout River, South Central Duval, and Western St. Johns — until 5 AM EDT Sunday, September 27, for minor coastal flooding of lots, parks, and roads with isolated closures. On the Atlantic basin, the National Hurricane Center's Saturday outlook continues advisories on Tropical Storm Gonzalo just east-northeast of Cabo Verde and Tropical Depression Fay well west-southwest of the Azores, with no tropical cyclone formation expected in the next seven days and neither system a Florida land hazard. West-central Florida's NWS Tampa Bay outlook Saturday afternoon called for a pleasant dry weekend with highs in the 80s and low humidity, while the Astor Flood Warning remained among listed products.
River flooding and coastal overflow can still push water into low-lying homes, camps, and businesses even when the rest of the state is dry.
