Tampa Bay Area Faces Afternoon Storms and Localized Flood Risk Monday
NWS Tampa Bay says a stagnant upper-level low is supporting scattered to numerous afternoon storms Monday across west-central and southwest Florida, with a risk of damaging gusts, small hail, and localized flooding. Tropical Storm Fay remains southwest of the Azores with no coastal watches or warnings.
The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay (Ruskin) says a stagnant upper-level low over west-central Florida is supporting scattered to numerous afternoon showers and thunderstorms across west-central and southwest Florida on Monday, Sept. 21, 2026. Stronger storms may produce damaging wind gusts of 50 mph or higher and small hail. With precipitable water near 2 inches and slow storm movement, NWS warns of localized flooding in urban and poorly drained areas.
NWS Tampa Bay’s Area Forecast Discussion, issued about 12:06 a.m. EDT Monday, notes the summertime pattern continues through midweek, with a potential shift toward drier air late in the week as a frontal boundary works south down the peninsula. Point forecasts show roughly a 50–60% chance of storms Monday afternoon for Tampa and inland Polk and Highland areas, including the GIF/Lakeland corridor, with similar coverage Tuesday.
Separately, the National Hurricane Center’s 8:00 a.m. EDT Monday Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook reports Tropical Storm Fay several hundred miles southwest of the Azores, with no other tropical cyclone formation expected in the Atlantic, Caribbean, or Gulf over the next 7 days. Public Advisory Number 9, issued at 3:00 p.m. GMT Monday, places the center near 33.3°N, 32.0°W — about 430 miles southwest of the Azores — with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph and continued weakening. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, and NHC lists no hazards affecting land.
