Tropical Storm Isaias Forms in the Gulf: What Central Florida Should Watch
NHC says Isaias is forecast to strengthen rapidly and approach the northern Gulf Coast Friday. Here is what it means for Lakeland and Polk County.
Tropical Storm Isaias formed in the southwestern Gulf early Wednesday, October 7. In its 4 AM CDT advisory, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) placed the center about 285 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph, moving east-northeast at 8 mph. NHC forecasts rapid strengthening and expects Isaias to become a hurricane by Thursday.
As of that advisory, no coastal watches or warnings were in effect. NHC said hurricane watches will likely be needed for part of the U.S. northern Gulf Coast later today. The current track takes Isaias north of the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday and toward the northern Gulf Coast on Friday.
NHC's rainfall outlook calls for 3 to 6 inches, with local totals up to 10 inches, from far southeastern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle from Friday through the weekend. It also calls for 1 to 3 inches, locally up to 5, across much of the Southeast, with flash, urban, and isolated river flooding possible. Central Florida is not the forecast landfall area right now, but tracks can change. Follow NHC and your local National Weather Service office for updates.
