NWS upgrades Upper Keys to Coastal Flood Warning for major saltwater flooding Sunday

NWS Key West upgraded the Upper Florida Keys to a Coastal Flood Warning through 5 PM EDT Sunday for major saltwater flooding that can close roads and inundate low-lying property, while Tropical Depression Fay remains far from Florida and NHC watches a trough east of Bermuda.

The National Weather Service Key West office has upgraded the Upper Florida Keys Coastal Flood Advisory to a Coastal Flood Warning, in effect through 5:00 PM EDT Sunday, September 27, 2026. Officials warn that major saltwater flooding is expected: numerous roads may close, low-lying homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure can be inundated, and some shoreline erosion is possible. A Coastal Flood Statement remains in effect for the Lower and Middle Keys through Sunday evening for saltwater flooding of low-elevation streets and lots, overflowing storm drains, and overtopped seawalls and docks. Persistent puddles should be treated as containing saltwater; do not drive through flooded streets.

King tides are keeping coastal saltwater flooding a primary concern across the island chain even as weekend rain chances stay below normal. NWS Key West notes a return toward a wetter pattern by Monday night into Tuesday, with breezes freshening midweek. Elsewhere in Florida, river and coastal flood products remain in the broader picture after recent heavy rains and elevated tides, so saturated ground and saltwater intrusion can still push moisture into structures after water recedes from roadways.

On the Atlantic tropics, Tropical Depression Fay Advisory Number 29 at 9:00 AM GMT Sunday places Fay near 29.2°N, 43.9°W — about 1,145 miles (1,840 km) west-southwest of the Azores — with maximum sustained winds near 35 mph, a southward motion near 3 mph, and an estimated minimum central pressure of 1010 mb. There are no coastal watches or warnings and no land hazards. NHC’s 8:00 AM EDT Sunday Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook is also monitoring a surface trough several hundred miles east of Bermuda with disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Formation chances are low through 48 hours (30 percent) and medium through 7 days (40 percent) as the system moves north then east over the central subtropical Atlantic. Fay and that trough are not Florida land threats based on these products.

Coastal saltwater flooding can leave standing water in homes, crawl spaces, and businesses even after tides fall. If water has entered a Lakeland or Polk County property, Florida Restoration Specialists can help with water damage restoration and water extraction — call (863) 588-6617.
